Boat Show Profile
From our first edition 6 years ago KIBS moves to full maturity with the 6th Edition in 2013 to be held at the National Exhibition Centre KINTEX. In 2008, with public access to the coastal regions only recently opened our need was to attract public interest. Our theme was an on water based festival to celebrate the cultural maritime history of Korea and to present the new opportunities for leisure boating to a public audience that had no knowledge or experience of boating and no boating culture. We need not have worried! Our first edition held at the old military base at the Jeongok fishing port on the Yellow Sea coast was overwhelmed, over 350,000 visitors enjoyed the 5 day event. Our success was to transform the location and over the next 4 years Jeongok became the boating centre for Gyeonggi Province with a 240 berth modern marina, on land dry storage for over 400 boats, a sailing and water sports activity centre and now a 1.85million sq m modern Marine Industrial Complex to house the growing industry and retail businesses supporting the boating activity. And, not to forget the weekend cottages and the cafe culture close to the harbor. In just 5 years the public recreational and related business developments at Jeongok have overtaken us and we have outgrown our first home. Add to this the dramatic growth in boating activity and the potential is clear. We need a bigger KIBS!

Figure Skating World Championships: Kim Yu-na wins short program

With figure skating on the decline in North America it was hoped that the return of charismatic South Korean skate queen Kim Yuna to this week's world championships would give the sport a badly-needed jolt.

 

But any boost her comeback gives the sport will be ephemeral with the Olympic champion set to hang up her blades after she defends her gold medal at next year's Winter Olympics in Sochi.
While it may not match the intensity of the Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding rivalry from the mid-90s, Kim's battles with Japan's two-time world champion Mao Asada remain one of figure skating's all-time greats.

 

Still, even the prospect of another showdown between the two 22-year-olds this week has not been enough to fill the 7,000-seat junior ice hockey arena chosen to host this year's worlds.
"The arena wasn't as full as I expected," lamented Kim after winning the ladies short skate on Thursday. "I just kept trying to think that this was another practice session and I focused on that."
While there are many seats available inside the Budweiser Gardens it has been standing room only in the media center where a battalion of Asian press have been camped out for the week-long competition.
Their presence, coupled with a lack of interest from North American media outlets, emphasizes the seismic shift figure skating's popularity has undergone over the last decade.
Not long ago, major figure skating events in North America were reserved for the biggest of venues, the three previous three worlds held in Canada (1996, 2001 and 2006) all staged in National Hockey League (NHL) rinks.
But those days are over and never coming back, according International Skating Union Vice-President David Dore.
"Everyone wants to come back to the big huge arenas and I don't think we are going back to that," Dore, a former chief of Figure Skating Canada, told Reuters. "I'm not so sure that we have lost the people so much as people are watching the sport in a different way.
"Maybe we are in a smaller venue but reaching a broader audience then before with social media."
'NEW PERSONALITIES'
Skating officials insist they see more upside to holding an event in a packed smaller venue than half-full NHL arenas. But the fact the a world championship featuring Kim and local ice skating celebrities and Olympic and world champion ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir have not filled the Gardens has shocked many.
It is not hard to pinpoint the reasons behind the drop in interest in North America and figure skating's rise in Asia where attendance and television ratings are soaring.
In the glory days of the sport in North America, Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Tara Lipinksi and Debbie Thomas were household names but this week Americans would be hard pressed to name the two U.S. female representatives in London - Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold.
"For North America you need homegrown stars, homegrown personalities, homegrown winners," David Raith, the executive director of U.S. Figure Skating told Reuters. "Finishing second, third is great but the public wants the winner. It's not just winning a world championship, it's winning an Olympic Games.
"We need to develop new personalities to come to the fore.
"What we have seen the last five, six, seven years is a lack of consistency from the top athletes with a couple of exceptions, Kim Yuna being one.
"She was a star going into 2010 (Olympics) became a star then disappeared, and when an athlete disappears that star power disappears with them."
Like Katarina Witt, Kim is one of the few skaters whose popularly has extended well beyond their own borders.
Following her spectacular victory at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Kim's appeal spiked, transforming into her a global celebrity and marketer's dream.
She remains an A-list celebrity in her native Korea but slipped off the radar screen in North America after stepping back from the sport for almost two years before returning to competition in December.
"I was in Japan recently and it was amazing, it was a throwback to 10 years ago," said Dore with a hint of wistfulness. "They embrace it a different way.
"It is a little bit of luck and little bit of everything coming together but Japanese officials have found a way to package very well."

First off, just want to make sure this is 100 percent clear: Despite the fixation on backbreaking manual labor, the above video comes to us via South Korea, not its northern, MJ-loving counterpart.

Now, on to the video: You know last summer when you were watching the second European trailer for Les Misérables on YouTube, and once it finished you noticed something in the related videos column called "HILARIOUS 'Call Me Maybe' Parody — OMG Must Watch!!" and, feeling particularly complacent that day, you decided to click on it? And after about 15 seconds into the extremely earnest acoustic cover of Carly Rae Jepsen's timeless classic, you realized two things: (1) This is neither a parody, nor hilarious, and (2) this is better than the original, so hating is not really an option? This is how you will feel when you watch "Les Militaribles," this Les Misérables "parody" done by the South Korean Air Force and realize that they have a better Javert than we do.

Some context: I guess they had a particularly nasty winter in Korea this year, and the servicemen in the air force spent a lot of their time shoveling snow on the runways as part of their mandatory two years of military service. The supervising officers decided to embark upon this musical and cinematic endeavor "to lift the spirit of servicemen who had to work so hard to clear snow during the unusually heavy winter this year," and to "help shatter the image of the military as a dull place and encourage more youth to take the service with delight," according to Major Cheon Myeong-nyeong, one of the directors of the project.

Not sure if depicting actual shoveling servicemen wailing lyrics like "Sweet Jesus, why have you forsaken me / Dig down, dig down, your prayers are weak," set to the tune of the chain-gang ditty "Look Down" is the best way to encourage enlistment, but it cannot be denied that the above 13-minute musical revue is ridiculously well-produced and sung. I need more viral vids from these guys, stat — maybe a little Pirates of Penzance or something? It's not like they've got anything more fun to do for the next couple years.

Marking its 27th anniversary, the Seoul Art Exhibition presents . The contemporary artists included in this collection have been highly active in numerous fields of art including calligraphy, design, and fine art etc. This exhibition explores the changing aspects of contemporary Hangeul through the work of artists with unique work styles and perspectives. Regardless of the medium, this exhibition is comprised of three sections each looking at the development of Hangeul since its inception, from the age of paper and pen to the digital age. The first section exhibits work transformed from the unique shape of Hangeul. The second section introduces Hangeul as a raw material of creation. The last section presents art inspired by the principle of Hangeul and its invention. As a whole, the work demonstrates the ways in which modern times might accommodate Hangeul – as a sound, as a form, and as a meaning. The first section on the first floor outlines the beauty of Hangeul based on its raw materials – the sky, the earth, the humans – through the unique work of the calligrapher and the graphic designer. On the second floor, the second section examines the beauty of Hangeul as characters and its structural formation through investigation and an experimental approach; this allows us to witness the harmony between the calligrapher, graphic designer, and dancer. As a result, by combining body, costume, and poetry, the second section transforms the various figures of Hangeul in its present age into an art. The last section foregrounds the personality of Hangeul as sound equaling image and allows the opportunity to witness the beauty of this alphabet due to its aesthetics and scientific principles. The exhibition is made through the interaction of artists with diverse backgrounds; it enables us to experience the beautiful variations and to broaden our understanding of Hangeul. We hope this exhibition highlights the aesthetic sense of Hangeul’s past and present, and also provides creative direction for the future of Korean art.   - Tim burton in korea - The Seoul Museum of Art has put together a series of work by international film director Tim Burton to celebrate the Christmas season. Movies such as Edward Scissorhands, Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Alice in Wonderland have made Burton a household name all around the world. He is well known for seamlessly combining fantasy with reality with a dash of dark humor. His movies have attracted a cult following and earned him a reputation as a true artist. This exhibition will feature 862 of his works including drawings, paintings, short films, sculptures, music and costumes that have been used in the making of his feature-length movies. The exhibition is divided into three parts. The first part, titled Surviving Burbank covers his younger years from 1958 to 1976. He was born Timothy Walter Burton in Burbank, California, United States. He was an introvert with a wild imagination that often gave birth to unique creations. The second, Beautifying Burbank, covers the years 19777 to 1984 including his time with Cal Arts and Walt Disney. Most of his work in that period was based on his fascination with childhood fantasies, inspiring the wacky but humorous Tim Burton characters that many of us recognize today. The last segment of the exhibition, Beyond Burbank, covers his most productive years from 1985 to the present. This is the period in which he created the great movies that made him world famous.

iWatch? Galaxy Watch?

Apple and Samsung already dominate the smartphone market, but the smartwatch industry could be the next in line for a wrist-worn tech attack, judging by “iWatch” and “Project J” rumors. Talk of an Apple alternative to Pebble and other wearables has surged in the past week, with a 100-person team tipped to be collaborating on a curved glass digital timepiece that would work as a companion to your iPhone. However, the Cupertino smartwatch crew is unlikely to be alone in its second-screen ambitions, with Samsung likely also on the case.

Samsung is no stranger to companion devices for its smartphones, in fact. The S Pebble, its compact music player designed as an accessory for the Galaxy S III, quietly launched in the US last December, while all the way back in 2010 Samsung was flirting with a combination stylus and Bluetooth headset for the original Galaxy Tab. What it hasn’t done, so far, is a watch.

That day could be sooner than you think, at least according to the latest batch of speculation. Samsung’s rumored “Project J” could well be a trio of hardware, not a single device, according to SamMobile‘s digging; the so-called “Project J Active Fortius” is tipped as a smartwatch-style device, at least by divining from the expected accessories. There will supposedly be an official arm band, bike mount, and pouch for the Fortius, with that – and the name -driving chatter that it’s a compact, fitness-related gizmo.

Samsung has its own speech control system, in the shape of S Voice, though initial feedback on the service was mixed. However, when combined with Google Now‘s predictive technologies as part of Android, that could make for a compelling way of interacting with digital services: a little like Project Glass, perhaps, but on your arm not suspended above your eye-line.

With estimates that the wearables market will surge by 2017, Samsung’s involvement in the segment is probably unavoidable. That health-tracking gadgets are expected to lead that surge, and that Samsung already has its S Health service up and running, only makes it all the more likely that fitness and activity monitoring will be its initial foothold. Factor in Samsung’s own work on flexible OLED, itself expected to come to fruition in 2013, and Apple might not be the only firm with a wraparound smartwatch.
